CANCELED - Strategic Tutoring

Tutoring that Empowers your Students to Lead their Own Learning!

Strategic Tutoring is an effective model for transforming tutoring  from homework completion time into sessions which equip students with the skills and strategies to empower them to independently manage the academic work they find challenging.

In this 2 day workshop participants will receive instruction in 2 Strategic Instruction Model Strategies:

Day 1: Strategic Tutoring  This workshop provides training in using 4 phases of instruction to help students analyze assignments and identify high utility strategies to be used to complete this and future assignments.  The use of this approach by all tutors will transform the effectiveness of your campus tutoring program.  Not only will students be more successful in classes, they will learn to effectively tackle academic challenges before tutoring is necessary.  Participants will leave with everything needed to establish and use a Strategic Tutoring program on their campuses.

Day 2: FIRST-Letter Mnemonic Strategy   This strategy provides students an organized way of independently approaching large bodies of information that need to be memorized, recalled, and applied.  Upon mastering the strategy, students will be able to perform more successfully on tests and quizzes.

You will leave with the Strategic Tutoring guidebook, FIRST-letter Mnemonic strategy, a Progress Monitoring binder, an electronic strategy template and a Strategic Tutoring toolkit.

Build an after-school program around Strategic Tutoring or use it whenever tutoring is offered.

Strategic Tutoring is part of the Strategic Instruction Model (SIM) out of the University of Kansas Center for Research on Learning.
