This session will help participants consider the various environmental stressors that challenge the resilience of transgender and gender-diverse youth; and consider strategies for supporting the physical, social–emotional, and mental health of transgender and gender-diverse youth. This session will also discuss how to recognize and challenge heteronoramativity in schools, and how sexual orientation and gender expression can influence student outcomes. Information will be presented to increase knowledge about the societal assumptions and structures that lie beneath heterosexist and sexist violence, harassment, and devaluing of targeted groups in schools. Affirmative counseling strategies can help support LGBT students experiencing difficulties will be provided. These strategies include supporting identity development and disclosure, and managing discrimination and homophobia.
