New Counselor Institute 2018-2019

Program Design

This institute is designed to support new counselors as comprehensive programs are developed and maintained.  Region 13's New Counselor Institute is limited to 30 counselors so that a collaborative, empowering, supportive, and effective model can be developed for counselors who are new to the role.

Our hope is that counselors will have support from Region 13 and this will help campuses and districts be able to grow their counseling programs so that students and families are able to develop strong connections and relationships with their school.

In today's climate, it is our focus at Region 13 to support our new school counselors in this capacity through this program.

Program Focus

  • Research-based best practices

  • Nurturing and building professional confidence

  • Incorporating effective and healthy self-care to manage this unique role in a world where we care for others

  • Skills/Information/Tools for use throughout the year delivered and shared timely as needed

  • Effective proactive problem-solving strategies to best support administrators, teachers, students, and parents

  • Data driven programs supporting Campus Improvement Plans and the new A-F Accountability System for Texas

Program Outcomes

The New Counselor Institute is a place where first year counselors will gather to learn and collaborate in a safe and nurturing environment. While the institute will offer concrete skills, such as how to build an ASCA Model Program and how to collect and utilize data to improve/advocate for a counseling program - this will also be a place where new counselors can seek guidance while collaborating and networking with other first year counselors within the region.

With it being offered four times throughout the school year, we will build the institute so the topics at each meeting coincide with events/challenges/etc. that arise throughout a school year. This will be an empowering institute, where counselors leave feeling supported and with a multitude of concrete tools to build a successful program. We want them to leave feeling as if they can change the world - because, they can. One student at a time!
