School-Based Applied Behavior Analysis Programs for Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder: Course 4 Communication and Social Skills Training

This series is divided up into 6 separate courses ranging between 90 min and 120 minutes each. The series is designed to be watched in sequence, but individual courses can be watched individually and still be beneficial. The National Professional Development Center (NPDC) on Autism Spectrum Disorders was the primary source for the information presented in the DVDs.

This is the fourth course in the series covering the topics of Communication and Social Skills Training.

Identified learner objectives include:

  1. Describe functional communication training (FCT)
  2. Identify the steps for implementing FCT
  3. List ways to collect data
  4. Define picture exchange communication system (PECS)
  5. Identify sources supporting evidence base for PECS
  6. Prepare PECS materials
  7. List steps for implementing PECS
  8. Identify steps involved in creating social skills programming

It is important that the learner understand that the use of PECS in this course is not meant to replace PECS training provided by an approved trainer.  This course is designed to provide an introduction or review of PECS for the learner.  Individuals interested in utilizing PECS should attend PECS training by an approved trainer.
