As our population continues to change, teachers are confronted with both the challenge and opportunity of assisting English Language Learners with their language development. This is even more important at the secondary level – where students have fewer years to develop their English proficiency, than their elementary counterparts. However, even though it might be difficult, it is not impossible for these students to learn the language – especially when they have support, encouragement and quality instruction from their teachers.
But in order for a teacher to provide quality instruction to beginner ELLs, they must first learn for themselves what that quality instruction looks like.
