Hemispheres, the international outreach consortium at the University of Texas at Austin, offers educational training to increase knowledge and understanding of Western Europe; Latin America; the Middle East; Russia, East Europe, and Eurasia; and South Asia. This Hemispheres-sponsored training event provides educators with tools and information specifically designed to meet the TEKS for 6th grade World Cultures.
Presentations and activities will help teachers learn more about the world while also providing them with classroom-ready lessons and materials that are tailored to save time in searching for new educational content appropriate for middle school students. Throughout the day, speakers will address a range of topics, including the important symbols and historical figures for different nations as well as cultural and religious celebrations, holidays and festivals from around the world.
Presenters will also guide participants through hands-on activities and carefully vetted materials (books, artifacts, video content, lesson plans) that have been created to strengthen 6th grade students analytical and critical thinking and build map-reading and map-creation skills. Teachers will leave with PowerPoint presentations and handouts related to the activities as well as books and other giveaways to add to their classroom libraries and instructional collections.
*Registration for this workshop is currently full at 35 participants. Unfortunately, participants who are not registered for this workshop will not be accepted at the door.
