Claims, Evidence, and Reasoning: Teaching Students to Justify Effectively
Workshops in the Secondary Science Pedagogy Series focus on HOW we teach our content to 6 -12 grade students in science. In each session, we will use TEKS aligned examples from middle school and high school science courses to model various instructional strategies. You will walk away with access to the documents needed to recreate any of the activities in your own classroom as well as ideas on how you can adjust each strategy to meet the needs of your particular students. Please check the class notes for details regarding the content of each individual training. (During the Safety Training, GHS and SDS training will be covered)
Have you ever wondered how to help your students more effectively answer questions that ask them to justify or explain their reasoning? The C-E-R format provides a clear structure that will help you teach students effective argumentation in science. In this hands-on, activity-filled workshop, we will learn engaging ways to introduce students to the C-E-R framework, analyze content specific examples from 6 - 12th grade science courses, and discuss practical ways to integrate C-E-R into the activities you have already developed for your course.
