Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) Foundations Team Training

This workshop series is designed for professionals (especially TEAMS!) working with students with complex communication needs (CCN) who need Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) systems.  We will demystify AAC and empower communication partners with a foundation so that no matter which “specific” app, device, training or technique presents itself, teams feel prepared.

This training emphasizes a Learn, Try, Apply approach.   Learn: Teams will develop common background knowledge and learn a 5 step process for how to organize and prioritize information related to Augmentative Communication decision making.
Try: Teams will explore and practice successful intervention strategies.
Apply: Teams will use homework, case studies, feedback and reflection to support meaningful, multi-modal communication outcomes.

Teams may have up to 3 members, and each team must include at least one speech-language pathologist.  Additional team members may include other SLPs, special education teachers, teachers of the visually impaired, and/or related service providers.  Teams should bring a student “case study” that they analyze throughout the training.

In addition to the 2-day training, teams will be provided with an online toolkit and ongoing support/technical assistance from Region 13's AT team.
