Strategic Instruction: Teaching Academic Vocabulary across the Content

Learn how you can use Strategic Instruction to ensure all students learn and are engaged in the learning. By thinking about the impact of your teaching, you will understand learning through the eyes of the student. The Region 13 specialists on the Strategic Instruction team create presentations and learning opportunities for teachers to plan strategic instruction designed to maximize their impact on learning.

The Clarifying and LINCS Routines and the VOCAB activity offer three different approaches to learning academic vocabulary using explicit instruction.

The Clarify Routine increases student comprehension and retention of important unit terms, people, and events by using examples, non-examples, real life experiences, and context to help students define and understand a term not just for the short term but to place it in his/her memory bank where it will often be recalled and used.

The LINCS Routine helps students quickly define words through auditory, cognitive, and visual prompts.  This fun approach to learning new words, allows students to build confidence in their knowledge of material since it focuses on most learning styles.

VOCAB is a quick and easy way to review many terms at one time allowing students to “play” with the words.  This tool guides students in making their own connections and then share their thinking with others.

Participants will receive a LINCS book, a Clarifying book, and materials for the VOCAB tool.

The two Routines are part of the Strategic Instruction Model (SIM) out of the University of Kansas Center for Research on Learning. VOCAB was developed by a SIM Professional Developer.
