CANCELED: Differentiated Writing: Reaching ELL and Developing Writers

Developing writers need opportunities to write, freedom to explore their own voice, inspiration from mentor texts, demonstrative teacher modeling, ongoing personal conferring, and extended time to write.

Teachers need guidance in building time to write into their curriculum, strategies for tapping into their students' passions and voices, support in finding and using mentor texts, help with modeling writing, guidance with holding ongoing conferences, and building in more time for students to write.

This series provides support for teachers in all of these areas, so they can support their developing writers. This series will function as a learning cohort. Teachers may opt to only register for the first two-day training or the ongoing cohort series through the school year. The best opportunity for sustained growth and support lies in opting for both.

The Differentiated Writing series will foster a space for teachers to truly revolutionize their instructional practice and transform student writing. Special consideration of English Language Learners and developing writers will be considered throughout the series.

This two-day training will serve as the first offering of our year-long series for the 16-17 school year. We intend to hold subsequent trainings in October, December, January, and April of the 2016-2017 school year.  Though dates for the rest of the series have not been published, we will have that information posted here soon.

During this two-day training, teachers will learn about sheltered instruction fundamentals, writer's workshop implementation, and participate in several demonstrative lesson cycles.

The institute will provide the fundamentals to begin and refine implementation of writer's workshop for all kinds of students in teachers' classrooms. We hope this May offering will provide excitement and inspiration for implementing workshop in the next school year.

Please email Janet Hester at janet.hester@esc13.txed.net if you have any questions about the series or this training.
