New Counselor Institute 2020-2021
3rd Annual Cohort

Program Design

The Region 13 New Counselor Institute is designed for counselors with less than 3 years experience or for experienced counselors looking for a refresher to their profession and career. This institute includes 4 workshops at Region 13 and a mini end of year conference in Fredericksburg. The Region 13 New Counselor Institute (NCI) is limited to 35 counselors per cohort so that a collaborative, empowering, supportive, and effective model can be developed for counselors who are new to the profession. The NCI is a place where participants can seek guidance while collaborating and networking with other new counselors in the region. Through this empowering learning opportunity, counselors will not only leave with a multitude of concrete tools to build a successful program, but they will also leave feeling supported and inspired. There will be individual and relevant support for each counselor's campus level and program need.

Through the Region 13 New Counselor Institute (NCI), we hope to increase retention in school counselors. Studies show increasing levels of burnout in school counselors due to the challenges and job demands associated with their profession.  The institute will provide support to member counselors and help campuses/districts grow their counseling programs so that students and families are able to develop strong connections and relationships within their school communities.

Testimonials from Participants:

“A school counselor's first year can be incredibly overwhelming. Even the most well-prepared first year counselor can be easily overwhelmed with information, tasks, and student and family needs. NCI was instrumental in helping me to prioritize and focus my efforts, guiding me in creating a blueprint to be able to continuously improve my school's counseling program, and providing a space for me to explore and process my new experiences as a counselor. NCI's seemingly bottomless pool of resources, networks, and support were a truly welcome gift during my first year as a counselor.”

~ Johanna, Manor ISD

“The New Counselor Institute [NCI] was a game changer for me as a new counselor!  The topics and activities planned were always timely, and just what I needed to hear to encourage me in my new position.  The relationships I built with other counselors and the discussions we were able to have helped me feel supported and valued.  It was a blessing to be able to relate with others in such a unique position on campus!”

~ Carla, Hutto ISD
