K-1 TEA Mathematics Achievement Academy

The purpose of the TEA Math Academy is to implement research-based mathematics achievement for Kindergarten through grade 3. The Kindergarten through grade 3 mathematics achievement academies will enhance teachers' knowledge and skills so they can effectively teach students in primary elementary grades to achieve mathematical proficiency. The academies will deepen teachers' understanding of research-based effective and systematic instructional practices in mathematics that they can use to help students develop problem-solving skills and a strong foundation of number sense and fluency.

Participating teachers must provide mathematics instruction directly to students within Region 13 districts in the appropriate grade level of the academy they are attending. Teachers who provide direct instruction include classroom teachers, special education teachers, and interventionist.   If you have attended ANY 3-day math academy during the summers of 2016-2019 and received a $350 stipend, you will not be eligible to receive another stipend.

This K-1 academy is being held at ESC Region 13. All eligible teachers are welcome to attend.

Through hands-on activities focusing on number concepts and relationships, whole number operations, and beginning fraction concepts, these academies are designed to strengthen participants' knowledge of mathematics' concepts and processes, improve overall mathematics instruction, and lead to student success on statewide assessments and post-secondary readiness. Participants will

  • examine the kindergarten - grade 1 TEKS based on learning progressions and critical checkpoints for student understanding;
  • experience classroom-ready activities, including formative assessment and follow-up activities that account for learner variability;
  • build a toolkit of strategies and key questions through analysis of activities for students with disabilities, English language learners, students struggling to learn mathematics, and gifted learners; and
  • explore structures that provide opportunities for meaningful practice and feedback.
