Visible Learning: PLC+ by Fisher and Frey 2021-22
ESF Aligned Workshop

This workshop is aligned with Effective Schools Framework Lever 5 EA 5.3 Data-Driven Instruction

What do you think of when you hear PLC? The idea of Professional Learning Communities in schools has been in practice for decades. The PLC teams focused on what students were learning, how they would know, and what they would do if students did not learn. That’s powerful, but sometimes not enough.  Sometimes, teams need time to discuss the best evidence they can find to impact student learning before they begin planning lessons.

Dr. Douglas Fisher and Dr. Nancy Frey created the PLC+ framework, built upon the John Hattie research data, to design a comprehensive system of engaging educators in a cycle of learning through inquiry. With a focus on equity and core values, they propose a new structure for professional learning communities that focuses on teaching for impact on student learning. They focus the collaborative discussions using the following questions:

  1. Where are we going?
  2. Where are we now?
  3. How do we move learning forward?
  4. What did we learn today?
  5. Who benefitted from our efforts and who did not? How can we remove barriers to learning?

Join us for three dynamic work sessions where we will read and study the PLC+ book written by Fisher and Frey. Participants will practice putting the PLC+ structures in place in their own schools and districts and return to calibrate their implementation and to plan for the next steps. By the end of the year, we will have established our own PLC+ groups in our schools impacting positively the learning of students.

Building upon prevailing PLC methodology, the PLC+ framework is aimed at refreshing current collaborative structures and helps support teachers’ decision-making in the context of self and collective efficacy, expectations, equity, and the activation of their own learning.
