STAAR Writing: Composition Bootcamp
Aligned with the ELAR TEKS

Join us for a dynamic workshop to learn how to guide your teaching writing to your students in a way that guarantees they understand the basic structure of a sentence and a paragraph, and then are able to extend those skills to writing longer pieces filled with creativity and student voice. Then you can integrate those foundational skills into the more demanding and creative components of a writing workshop in your classes.

Across the state, students' STAAR writing scores demonstrate they often struggle with basic writing skills. In the STAAR Writing Bootcamps, participants will examine STAAR writing data to identify critical gaps in students' skills, and then they will learn writing strategies to close those gaps. You will align your writing instruction with the newly adopted ELAR TEKS which stresses students being able to write a variety of sentence types and compostions including the short answer essays on STAAR with attention to mastering writing conventions during the writing process. You'll also learn instructional strategies for the STAAR short constructed responses which will assess a student's skills at writing short responses to informational texts from across the curriculum.

The STAAR Writing Boot Camps, focused on sentence structure and short compositions, for elementary and secondary teachers will give you the tools and techniques provided by the Strategic Instruction Model (SIM) Sentence, Paragraph, and Essay Writing Strategies to build student knowledge of and skills with sentence and paragraph structures, and then help you integrate those structured writing models with other writing instruction models including those created by Jeff Anderson, Gretchen Bernabei, and others.

Attending the writing workshop will help you establish and implement a successful writing instruction program in your classroom which gives your students much needed writing skills. Most importantly, by day's end, you and your fellow writing teachers will learn several ways of teaching important writing skills to students, especially those who are struggling writers.

These writing workshops are created and will be presented by the Region 13 Strategic Instruction experts who taught ELA in classsrooms with diverse student population.
