Making LGBTQ+ Students Proud of Their Library
Session Description:
Almost 2 million teenagers, or about 10%, identify as LGBTQ+. How might your library enhance its support for these students and their needs? Learn more about strategies to better include and welcome LGBTQ+ students in your library as well as some common mistakes to avoid. Let’s help your library have more pride!
Presenter Bio:
Stacy Gilbert (she/her) is a middle-school and high-school librarian in Virginia with deep Texan roots. Stacy was a math teacher for ten years before becoming a librarian four years ago and has published articles in School Library Connection and Knowledge Quest. She has co-chaired the Virginia Association of School Librarians (VAASL) Diversity and Inclusion Committee, and she currently sponsors her school's GSA and co-chairs VAASL's inclusive books program. Some of her professional interests include: equity, outreach to all students and content areas, makerspaces, excellent books for teens, professional development for teachers and librarians, and ensuring the library is a safe and welcoming place for all. She is active on Twitter @MamaGilbsLib and enjoys networking with other school librarians. She loves good Southern cooking, all types of music (except polka), and spending time with her wife, who is also a school librarian.
