CANCELED - Essentials for Engagement in the Secondary ELAR Classroom
This session has been canceled. Please check with the workshop contact for more details or reschedule options.

The first few years as an English teacher are spent learning about the TEKS, lesson sequencing, and differentiating instruction for the diverse learners in today’s secondary ELAR classroom. But perhaps the most elusive of skills to acquire is that of keeping students engaged bell to bell. What are the secrets to motivating learners to put forth their best efforts?

Designed for educators in their first few years of teaching, participants will benefit from time to read, reflect, and discuss best practices that build both student interest and student confidence.

In this workshop, we will collaborate to:

  • Utilize structures for student interaction and collaboration to encourage student talk in the classroom.
  • Examine the role metacognition plays in student success while reading and writing.
  • Investigate ways to increase student motivation by incorporating choice and content relevance.
  • Study brain-based learning strategies involving movement, social-emotional learning, etc. to positively impact student engagement over the course of a class period.

Participants will have time built into the workshop for planning in order to incorporate the strategies learned into lesson plans.
