Teaching for Equity in ELAR
Please note this workshop has a new date of 4/21/2022. Please check with the workshop contact for more information.

As teachers of ELAR, we have an opportunity to know our students deeply and personally through writing and discussion. We are also state-tested at nearly every level, our grading is time and labor intensive, and the skills we teach are foundational for success in other contents. This reality positions us to see and address inequity in unique ways to ensure that all students are valued and their learning needs are met.

In this workshop, we will collaborate to:

  • Examine current equity concerns in ELAR with an opportunity to discuss and reflect with other participants.

  • Consider educator identities that impact teaching practices and the learning environment.

  • Explore strategies for getting to know student histories and learning needs and then use what's uncovered as a resource to enrich student learning and the classroom community.

  • Study research-based ELAR teaching strategies for diverse learners including best practices for special education students, English language learners, and migrant children.

  • Plan for opportunities for students to collaborate, have choice in reading and writing assignments, find relevance in their learning, and have enhanced understanding of content.

Participants will have time built into the workshop for planning in order to incorporate the strategies learned into lesson plans.
