This training, designed for content area secondary and intermediate elementary school teachers, will explore dynamic, hands-on strategies for sheltering instruction in the content areas for English Language Learners. This workshop includes an introduction to concepts of second language acquisition, an overview of sheltered instruction, and strategies for differentiating instruction according to different language proficiency levels. In addition, this interactive training will model sheltered instruction strategies with a special focus on the English Languge Proficiency Standards (ELPS).   Participants will come away from this training with a comprehensive plan for successfully teaching English learners that includes:

  • welcoming English learners
  • constructing language-rich, interactive classsrooms
  • differentiating instruction
  • planning with the ELPS

 

 
Participants will receive a copy of  Sheltered Instruction Plus:  A Comprehensive Plan for Successfully Teaching English Language Learners
 
Since sheltered instruction is special language program delivery option, participants must be present for the entire workshop to receive credit.
