In this workshop, participants will explore developmentally appropriate uses of picture books in the middle school ELAR classrooms. Topics include:
- Develop prior knowledge through simple text and illustrations as well as more complicated high interest picture books
- Pairing classic texts with similarly themed picture books to create a platform for comparison and analysis.
- Using wordless picture books to spark ideas for narration.
- Studying beloved picture books in terms of craft and selecting a mentor text upon which to create a sequel.
- Interpreting the subtext created by the marriage of text and illustrations.
- Study informational text collections to develop deep understanding of use of text features to interpret factual, quantitative, or technical information presented in maps, charts, illustrations, graphs, timelines, tables, and diagrams.
- Delving into the work of one children’s author to analyze stylistic elements, themes and character development.
This is considered a BUILDING Workshop.
· Building Professional Development is considered extending; the learning experiences are designed to build upon core knowledge and practices experienced teachers have.
· Building Professional Development ideally should extend the knowledge in the Core Workshops, allowing teachers to further their skills in a particular professional development pathway.
