Region 13 is proud to continue the ELAR Distinguished Speaker Series for ELAR educators. Throughout the year, a renowned and highly-acclaimed ELAR expert will deliver a workshop that prepares educators for the rigor and demand of the STAAR, AP courses, and post-secondary readiness. Comprehension, Collaboration and Inquiry
In this interactive session, Harvey "Smokey" Daniels will use a variety of nonfiction texts to demonstrate engaging instruction and deep understanding. Participants will try out a series of practical strategies for themselves, and adapt these to their own students. We will look at video of kids and teachers at work, and talk about all the relevant management issues. In the afternoon, we will join in an inquiry unit that models how to transform required curricular topics into questions kids cannot resist investigating. The workshop is based on ideas from Smokey's book with Stephanie Harvey, Comprehension and Collaboration: Inquiry Circles in Action, and brings examples from all grade levels.
All participants will receive Smokey's book Comprehension and Collaboration: Inquiry Circles in Action.
