Dan Meyer- "Rules for the Road" Creating Real-World Problem Solving Experiences in the Math Classroom (6-12)

The Distinguished Speakers in Math series provides subject experts who will address relevant issues and hot topics in the field of mathematics.

Participants will deepen their content knowledge, add new ideas to their toolkit of resources, and learn engaging strategies that can be implemented immediately in the math classroom.

In this session Mr. Meyers and the group will focus first on "real-world math" defined in the TEKS, and how to create real-world tasks that engage and challenge students.  Teaching moves will be modeled and discussed with a focus on their intent and effect.

The centerpiece of this day is a document of "rules for the road" – easily implemented techniques for putting students in that necessary puzzled state – created during this session.  Teachers will leave with a website of resources and documents that contain all the notes we co-construct over the course of the workshop.
