"Why Won't You Just Tell Us the Answer?":Teaching Historical Thinking in Grades 7-12

Written by an experienced classroom U.S. History teacher, "Why Won't You Just Tell Us the Answer?": Teaching Historical Thinking in Grades 7-12, chronicles Bruce Lesh's approach to developing and incorporating historical study investigations with his students at the center of the process.  It is a remarkable read for anyone searching for a practicable method of engaging students in historical analysis.

Participants will be expected to read independently and log-in to the online platform to submit reading reflections and collaborate with others in the book study process.  This online book study course will span several weeks (November  20th- January 17th, 2016)

Intended Audience: this course is open to any social studies teacher, social studies curriculum specialist, instructional coach, and any interested school librarian.  Although the book title states grades 7-12, elementary teachers of grades 4, 5, and 6 may find this book study useful.

Participants are responsible for acquiring their own copy of the book or e-text.  The cost of the workshop ($50) has been adjusted to reflect the out of pocket book cost by the district or participant.

FAQs

What do I need to participate?

-A copy of the book and access to a computer or e-device to log-in to the Edmodo book study group.

I’ve never heard of Edmodo, what is it?

-Edmodo is an online classroom platform created to connect teachers and students in a free and safe way.  We chose Edmodo because many Region 13 educators are currently using the platform with students.  If you are not, it will be an opportunity to experience the platform through the perspective of the learner and explore it on your own.

I think I will need some help figuring out Edmodo, can you help me?

-Yes, a pre-recorded video will be shared with participants explaining how to log-in, change settings, find our group, and familiarize yourself with other features of Edmodo.

Can I participate if I am a fourth grade teacher?

-Yes, although the book title states grades 7-12, teachers of grades 4, 5, and 6 may also find this book study useful.

I’m a social studies teacher in Plano, Texas, can I still participate?

-Yes, this workshop is open to any interested individual listed in the Intended Audience.  Since this is an online workshop, you don’t have to live in the Region 13 area to participate.  You do have to establish a Region 13  e-campus account to register.

What will I be expected to do exactly?

-A syllabus will be shared with participants outlining the questions for each chapter and the posting schedule.  Participants will be required to post a response to one question per chapter and reflect/respond to a post from a colleague in the book study.

Do I have to complete a final project?

-No, but feel free to overachieve if you so desire.

Why should I participate in this book study?

-It is a great opportunity to get professional development hours in a different way.
-There will be other ”free” opportunities offered in a face-to-face format at Region 13 to build on what you learn in this book (more to follow on this).
-This is a book specifically for social studies educators.
-You can log-in and post in Edmodo at any time of the day.
-It is intended to give you PD credit during the holiday season.
