Wilson Reading System WEB- BASEED Level 1 Certification Training

Wilson Reading System (WRS) is an Orton-Gillingham based intervention.  It is a multi-sensory, synthetic approach to teaching reading and spelling to students with language-based difficulties in written language.  It is an integrated system for teaching all aspects of decoding and encoding.

WRS is designed for adults and for students in grades 3 – 12, but can be used with younger children as well.  The program has been used successfully in school settings with small groups or even as the spelling curriculum for an entire class.  The program is sequenced in 12 steps that are based on the 6 syllable types (closed vowel syllables, silent e syllables, open vowel syllables, syllables ending in a consonant with –l3, r-controlled syllables, and diphthongs syllables).  Words are decoded and encoded by students from the beginning.

Certification takes place in monthly seminars and observations during the school year.

Each participant will need to select one student with significant reading and spelling difficulties to work with throughout the school year for a minimum of 60 lessons.  The student needs to be at least one grade level below his current grade placement and be able to read at a minimum of 2.5 reading level.  The participant will need to work with the student four times per week for a minimum of 60 minutes per lesson.

A One-hour observation / consultation with each teacher / student pair will need to be scheduled for five times throughout the school year (2 it he fall and 3 in the spring).  You will be observed teaching a lesson and provided with both oral and written feedback after each lesson.  In addition to the practicum supervision, there will be one day long (Start-Up Day) and four 2 ½ hour seminars provided throughout the school year that are required meetings.
