Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition (ADOS-2) Clinical Training

ADOS-2 Facilitated Training

The Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, 2nd Edition (ADOS-2) is considered a “gold standard” instrument used for assessing and diagnosing autism spectrum disorders across ages, developmental levels, and language skills. The second edition includes revised algorithms, a new comparison score for Modules 1-3, updated protocols with clearer administration and coding guidelines. It also contains a Toddler Module designed to assess children ages 12 – 30 months.

The two-day ADOS-2 workshop is designed for evaluators with a prior background in autism and formal testing, including LSSPs, educational diagnosticians, speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, and physical therapists. The workshop will use a lecture format and videos to introduce the basic principles of administering, coding, scoring the algorithm and severity metric for ADOS-2 modules 1 through 4.

This training will provide an essential step towards competence in using the ADOS-2 as well as how to establish inter-rater reliability on the instrument. Participants will also gain an understanding of how to incorporate the ADOS-2 results into a comprehensive-team based evaluation in the pubic school setting.

Workshop conducted by: Dr. Jan Schaefer, BCBA-D and CEO of Collaborative Autism Resources and Education, LLC (CARE, LLC) who has extensive experience evaluating and treating individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) across the age span. She is a “research reliable” administrator of the ADOS-2.

Day one focuses on Modules three and four which are appropriate for children, adolescents, and adults who have ASD and fluent speech. Day two will focus on Modules one and two which are used with children who have ASD and are not yet verbal up to those who speak in phrases. For this administration, the child's parent, teacher, or caregiver will need to be present and involved in the assessment. A brief overview of the toddler module will also be provided.

Objectives:

Attendees will learn:

  • How the ADOS-2 targets behaviors specific to autism spectrum disorders
  • How to select the correct module of the ADOS-2 based upon an individual's level of language
  • When and how to involve parents or other adults known to the child in ADOS-2 administration
  • Coding conventions of scoring the ADOS-2
  • When it is/is not appropriate to adapt the ADOS-2 for various populations (e.g., older children with severe delay)
  • Modifications to introduce for children who are not complying with the activities
  • How to use the ADOS-2 classification system together with the DSM.
  • How to appropriately document use of the ADOS-2 in a report
  • Ways to continue practicing ADOS-2 coding and administration after the workshop
  • Requirements for the reliability process in using the ADOS-2 at an expert level
