This course is for any secondary Social Studies teacher that wants to incorporate more reading and writing skills into their classrooms.
Literacy is vital to the success of students. In the past, literacy was taught and used primarily in the English Language Arts classroom. The moment students left their Language Arts classes, the focus on literacy diminished. Today, research has shown that incorporating literacy into all content areas not only improves student success but also provides students with the tools they will need to become a successful citizen in the future. Bringing literacy into Science, Math, and Social Studies classrooms not only provides students with the opportunity to grow their academic vocabulary but also gives them a better understanding of the content in those specific areas.
In this self-paced, online learning course, you will build your foundational knowledge, skills, and support needed to understand the impact of literacy in the social studies classroom, learn strategies to incorporate more reading and writing into the daily classroom structure, and apply knowledge from the course to embed reading and writing into your instructional routines.By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Understand the impact of reading and writing in the social studies classroom.
- Learn strategies for incorporating reading and writing into the daily classroom structure.
