RLA: Building Book Love in the Secondary RLA Classroom

As an RLA teacher, you understand the importance of developing a love for reading in your students.  This course is designed to help you do just that!



Throughout this course, you will learn strategies for building a community of readers in your classroom.  You will explore ways to help students connect with books on a personal level and how to inspire a passion for reading that will last a lifetime. You will delve into the latest research on literacy development and learn how to foster a love for reading.  You will also discover techniques for selecting books that will engage your students and keep them excited about reading.  


 This course will address the following:


  • Creating a classroom library with a wide variety of genres, topics, and reading levels to appeal to all students.

  • Providing time for independent reading and choice reading so students can explore their interests and discover new authors and titles.

  • Incorporating read-alouds into daily instruction to expose students to new books and foster a love of reading.

  • Encouraging book talks and book clubs to promote discussion and critical thinking about literature.

  • Creating a positive reading culture in the classroom by modeling reading behaviors, sharing personal reading experiences, and promoting reading as a lifelong habit.

  • Providing access to resources such as bookmarks, reading logs, and book recommendation lists to help students track their reading progress and discover new books.
