Join us for a 2 part professional development session.

9:00-12:00 Taking the Helm: Ethics in Educational Interpreting

This session will introduce Demand-Control Schema and Role-Space, and their application to interpreting in the educational setting. Participants will analyze ethical situations and challenge the misconceptions of "that's not my role" and "it depends". The presentation will focus on Demand-Control Schema and the Proposed Constructs as developed by Robyn Dean and Robert Pollard, in conjunction with an introduction to Role-Space as developed by Robert Lee and Peter Llewellyn-Jones.

Objectives:

  1. Understand the 4 types of demands faced in ethical decision-making.
  2. Identify and articulate controls in response to demands.
  3. Identify prioritized/forfeited values and the resultant demands.
  4. Examine role space and the planes of interaction management, participant alignment, and presentation of self.

1:00-4:00 Fingerspelling Eek!: Linguistic Basics and Skill Building

This session will introduce linguistics of fingerspelling, including phonological and morphological features, as well as co-articulation in fingerspelling production. Participants will review video samples of fingerspelling variances, explore BICS and CALP of language acquisition, presentation register implications of fingerspelling production, and skill building activities to improve receptive fingerspelling recognition.

Objectives:

  1. Identify phonological and morphological features of ASL and the relationship to fingerspelling.
  2. Understand the process of language acquisition through the lens of BICS and CALP for L1 and L2 learners.
  3. Identify register use from Intimate to Frozen and the implication for fingerspelling production.
  4. Participate in skill building activities to apply linguistic rules to improve receptive understanding of fingerspelling.

This course is eligible for 6 CEUs.
