RLA: Syllable Spotlight: Exploring the 6 Syllable Types and the Magic of Morphology
ESC Region 13 - Main Campus
6.00 CPE Credits
$100.00

This course is designed to help educators better understand syllabication and morphology. Participants will explore each syllable type and morphological concept in depth, learning how to identify, teach, and reinforce these fundamental building blocks of English phonics and word structure.

Why is this important:

Understanding syllables is vital for literacy because it forms the foundation of reading and spelling. Learning key foundational literacy concepts like phonics, syllable division, phonological awareness, and decoding all rely on a solid grasp of syllables themselves.

Research has shown that when children understand the morphemes that make up words, they become better readers and spellers. They also develop a greater appreciation for language and its complexities.

Course Objectives:

  • Understand the significance of the six syllable types in reading and spelling.

  • Learn to accurately identify and classify each syllable type.

  • Develop strategies for teaching each syllable type effectively.

  • Explore instructional methods for differentiating syllable type instruction based on student needs.

  • Understand basic morphological concepts, including roots, prefixes, and suffixes.

  • Enhance literacy instruction through practical activities and resources focusing on both syllable types and morphology.
