Math STAAR: Beyond Key Words - Strategies for Problem Solving, Grades 3 - Algebra I
ESC Region 13
6.00 CPE Credits
$100.00

Too often, students fall into the trap of relying on “keyword” shortcuts to solve math problems—only to be led astray when those tricks don’t work. In this interactive session, we will challenge that habit and explore strategies that foster true mathematical thinkers.

Designed for educators in Grades 3 through Algebra I, this session focuses on cultivating students’ ability to make sense of problems, represent their thinking visually and numerically, and justify their reasoning. Through engaging routines and high-leverage tools—like strip diagrams, number lines, equations, and visual models—we’ll explore how to help all learners navigate problem-solving with confidence.

Aligned with STAAR expectations, this session equips educators with practical, ready-to-use strategies that promote flexibility, critical thinking, and a deeper understanding of math—because real problem solving starts with sense-making, not shortcuts.

Participants will:

* Examine the limitations of keyword-based strategies and explore more effective approaches to problem-solving

* Learn how to incorporate visual models and multiple representations to support conceptual understanding

* Practice using a problem-solving model that incorporates analyzing given information, formulating a plan or strategy, determining a solution, justifying the solution, and evaluating the problem-solving process and the reasonableness of the solution

* Discover ways to align problem-solving instruction with STAAR rigor and expectations across tested grades
