This one day workshop is designed for those learning and working to improve their SEE sign skills.  The workshop will begin with 2 hours of Ethics review and discussion.  Participants will review the National Code of Ethics for Interpreters and will apply this information to daily work experiences in large and small group discussions. 


Participants will also work to increase their core subject vocabulary for Science and Social Studies using the “Region 13 Additional 1600 Signs”.  Participants will practice using the new signs obtained to practice expressive and receptive sign skills.  They will learn new strategies for monitoring their personal sign skill growth. 


In addition to vocabulary, participants will focus on the following areas of sign skill:


  • Didactic Fingerspelling

  • Role shifting

  • Self-Care


Program Objective

As a result of participation in this class, the participant will be able to:

  • Apply the National Code of Interpreter Ethics in everyday work situations

  • Apply advanced level SEE science and social studies vocabulary in classroom lectures

  • Apply didactic fingerspelling to student instruction in the classroom

  • Discuss the benefits of Signing Exact English for the development of English syntax and vocabulary for students who are deaf or hard of hearing

  • Apply role shifting when interpreting 

  • Identify the visual features of sign language that correspond to grammar and semantics of the English language
