Playful Pathways to Mathematical Thinking in Early Childhood: A Four Part Series

This four-part cohort experience is designed to support early childhood educators in deepening their understanding of math over time. Across the school year, participants will explore how to thoughtfully interpret early childhood math standards and translate them into meaningful, developmentally appropriate experiences embedded in daily classroom life.

Rather than focusing on isolated lessons, this series emphasizes building a positive relationship with math, learning to notice mathematics in the environment and routines, and intentionally mathematizing the school day. Participants will examine how numeracy routines, play, and everyday moments can strengthen foundational math skills and support children’s mathematical thinking across content areas.

Each session builds on the previous one, allowing time for reflection, classroom implementation, and revisiting ideas with greater clarity. Throughout the series, participants will connect practice to the Texas Prekindergarten Guidelines, strengthening their confidence in aligning instruction while honoring play-based, child-centered learning. Educators will leave the cohort with a deeper understanding of early math, practical strategies they can adapt over time, and a more confident, intentional approach to supporting mathematical thinking in young learners.

Learning Series Objectives:

  1. Learn effective strategies for teaching foundational mathematic skills and encouraging mathematical thinking.
  2. Understand the content within each math Texas Prekindergarten Guideline.
  3. Identify the standards that can be integrated across content areas.
  4. Gain a wealth of ideas to implement in your classroom.
  5. Create fun make-and-take activities to enhance your instruction.
