Charts and Tables and Diagrams, Oh My!
Join us as we explore strategies for helping students read, analyze, and make meaning from charts, graphs, tables, diagrams, models, and other scientific visuals. Participants will examine grades 3-5 TEKS-aligned examples, explore questioning techniques that promote deeper thinking, and learn instructional approaches that support students in synthesizing information from multiple sources. Teachers will leave with practical tools to strengthen students' ability to use visual data to support scientific understanding and evidence-based explanations.
Learning Objectives:
- Learn about the practice of visual literacy in science and supporting research
- Evaluate the skills needed to interpret the various types of visuals in science
- Develop a model for for interpreting graphs, tables, and diagrams that transfers from teacher to student
- Discover ways to extend visual interpretation into verbal and written comprehension
- Dedicate structured planning time to Integrate scientific visuals and interpretation skills into upcoming lessons
