Motivational Interviewing (MI) is an evidence-based, person-centered counseling approach that aims to help individuals explore ambivalence, and take action toward behavior change aligned with values. When working with teens who have substance use concerns, MI can be a valuable tool to engage them in a non-punitive, collaborative manner.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understand the principles and core skills of Motivational Interviewing and how they can be applied to working with teens struggling with substance use.

  2. Learn how to effectively engage and build rapport with teenagers, even in difficult or resistant situations.

  3. Develop skills to elicit and strengthen a teen's motivation for change regarding their substance use.

  4. Gain strategies for addressing common challenges and resistance that may arise when using Motivational Interviewing with teens.
