Social Cognitive Thinking in Asperger Syndrome/High Functioning Austim
6.00 CPE Credits
This seminar is targeting students that function high on the autism spectrum and students with NLD.
This workshop will explore the abstract and complex nature of social thinking and social skills that are expected to participate in the classroom environment. The I LAUGH model of social cognition will be introduced to help parents and educators gain a concrete understanding of these abstract skills. Teaching strategies will be reviewed in the morning. In the afternoon, we will explore the complexities of assessing students with social weaknesses who often perform well on tests but not in real-life situations. Both standardized and informal assessment tools will be explored to better understand these children's very real needs
Participants will be able to:
-Define the difference between teaching social skills and teaching social thinking
-Describe each of the 6 letters in the acronym ILAUGH
-Name 3 strategies that they can use that correspond to areas in ILAUGH
-Detail the issues with standardized testing and real life functioning
-Describe 3 informal assessment tasks that help to qualitatively understand social learning challenges
