Student Driven Learning Through Inquiry and Innovation

Welcome to the PBL Online Course, Student Driven Learning through Inquiry and Innovation. This is part of a series of courses to support you in understanding and implementing PBL, Project based learning, in your classroom.   Student-driven inquiry is an integral piece of the PBL puzzle. Throughout the PBL process, students should be engaged in a process of asking questions, utilizing resources, making connections, drawing conclusions, and constructing meaning.   When students engage in inquiry, they are also sharpening 21st century competencies such as collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking as they grapple over problems and construe meaning together. When teachers develop inquiry lessons, these skills should be capitalized on.   Another key component for teachers to consider while planning is how to give students voice and choice in the inquiry process. Students need the opportunity to practice independent decision-making and to experience and learn from failure within the safe school environment.

In this course you will learn:

  • what is meant by student inquiry in PBL.
  • how to manage student inquiry with student expectations in state standards.
  • how to facilitate the learning process using innovation pedagogies so that students feel compelled to ask questions and seek answers.
  • how to create an environment that values failure as part of the iterative process of learning.

We hope that you will use this course to create a new PBL project or to refine an existing project.
