Keynote: Keeping it Legal and Ethical in Special Education (VC)

Jim Walsh

This session will provide a review of new legislation that will impact special education services in Texas, as well as important court cases that have practical implications.

Disproportionality - Are you Part of the Problem? How Culturally Proficient Are You? (VC)

Sherry DiMarco

Disproportionality in Special Education is under the microscope at both the state and federal levels. Addressing this issue requires that we look at ourselves and identify our own hidden biases before we can look at our students and identify their needs. This workshop will guide you through a process of self-reflection so you can keep your own biases out of your work with individual students.

Interpreting Test Results: How to Write This in Your Reports (VC)

Gail Cheramie

A review of the most recent XBA 2.0 using case studies. Emphasis will be placed on clinical judgment for testing and how to organize and write up results. If participants would like to bring a case study for discussion, they are encouraged to do so.

The Neuropsychology of Mathematics (VC)

Steven Feifer

This workshop will explore how young children learn and acquire basic mathematical skills from a brain-based educational perspective.

The Neuropsychology of Emotional Disturbance (VC)

Steven Feifer

Best Practice Evaluation for Visual Impairment (VC)

Marnee Loftin

This session will provide a brief overview of visual impairment, including common etiologies and establishing eligibility for Visual Impairment. Emphasis will be on selection of appropriate instruments for emotional/behavioral, cognitive, adaptive behavior, and educational evaluations. Specific information on appropriate accommodations as well as cautionary statements will be discussed.

Marnee Loftin

This session will discuss additional eligibility that may occur in students with visual impairments. Specific etiologies that may be associated with other specific eligibility will be discussed. Specific procedures and guidelines for interpretation of results will be presented for Intellectual Disabilities, Specific Learning Disabilities, Autism, and Emotional Disturbance. Emphasis throughout this session will be on a collaborative model of assessment.

What Diagnosticians and LSSPs Need to Know about Language Development in ELLs

Katharine Muller

Distinguishing language development from disability is a common challenge for many evaluation professionals in Texas. This workshop will review the different language development trajectories of ELL students, formal and informal assessment practices for language proficiency and data interpretation from a cross-linguistic perspective. Emphasis will be given to the evaluation of Spanish-speaking students.

Trust-Based Relational Intervention (TBRI©) Overview

Teri Wood

Children and youth who have experienced foster care or orphanage-rearing have often experienced complex developmental trauma, demonstrating an interactive set of psychological and behavioral issues. Trust-Based Relational Intervention (TBRI)© is a therapeutic model that trains caregivers to provide effective support and treatment for at-risk children. TBRI© has been applied in orphanages, courts, residential treatment facilities, group homes, foster and adoptive homes, churches, and schools. It has been used effectively with children and youth of all ages and all risk levels. This overview training will provide attendees with information about trauma including the Adverse Childhood Experiences Study and brain theory.  Participants will also learn about Connecting, Empowerment and Correcting, the three basic principles of TBRI©, and will be given related strategies to implement these principles in the school setting.

Pre-Planning for the ARD Meeting

Laura Otey

Collaborate. Work together. Move through resistance. Resolve differences without casualties. These are just some of the expectations for school staff and parents as they prepare for and conduct ARD/IEP meetings. A successful ARD meeting is 40% pre-meeting preparation and 60% meeting structure and participation. This session will present specific strategies for both preparing for and entering an effective ARD meeting.
