Analyzing Text Complexity: Close Reading Nonfiction

Learn about teaching practices to help your students understand and remember your content. In our interactive workshops, you will learn evidence-based instructional strategies to ensure all students receive engaging and standards-based instruction in classrooms.

The day-long sessions are designed to give you teaching methods and ideas that you can use in your classroom with your students to improve their learning and their performance on assessments.

The STAAR Content Boot Camp workshops are designed to improve your students' STAAR performance. They will be held in October, November, and January and will help you teach students how to ttackle abstract concepts, vocabulary, questioning, organization, and information review.

You will also learn all elements of a strong core instructional program with opportunites to discuss and to plan with fellow teachers for implemetation of the instructional strategies. Those elements include, but are not limited to: TEKS based curriculum planning, explicit instruction, Visible Learning high impact strategies, Strategic Instruction Model (SIM), and disciplinary literacy.

The workshops were created and will be presented by Region 13 Strategic Instruction experts who enjoy meeting the needs of teachers working in challenging and demanding classrooms with a diverse range of students. We want to make certain that educators attending our sessions walk away with a more in-depth knowledge of effective teaching skills and with specific instructional tools to use with students.

Teaching students to read nonfiction requires teachers to plan for both the level of difficulty to read the text but also consider fluency, strategic thinking skills and reading stamina required. Participants will learn close reading strategies for nonfiction from a variety of sources including the Beers and Probst signposts. We will apply the strategies to different nonfiction texts and will explore writing in response to the text using the writing to read research of Dr. Timothy Shanahan.
