Vestibular Disorders: Early Identification in Children Who Are Deaf or Hard of Hearing

Vestibular disorders and motor disorders are a largely ignored secondary disability of children who are deaf or hard of hearing. Though some research reports over 50% of these children suffer from these ailments, very little education is offered to early intervention providers and teachers about the red flags, diagnostic evaluations, behavioral symptomology, and potential habilitation.    In this course, we will describe vestibular disorders and provide information about the reported frequency of vestibular disorders among children who are deaf or hard of hearing. We will discuss “red flags” and assessment procedures. We will also discuss the ramifications for motor delays and safety issues for children who are Deaf/Hard of Hearing with this disorder as well as recent literature on remediation.    Featuring

  1. Participants will be able to describe red flags in the development of children who are deaf or hard of hearing and assessment procedures for autism vestibular disorders regarding children who are deaf or hard of hearing. (LO 1)
  2. Participants will be able to describe ramifications for motor delays and safety issues for children who are who are deaf or hard of hearing and have vestibular disorders. (LO 2)
  3. Participants will be able to describe remediation for children who are deaf or hard of hearing with vestibular disorders. (LO 3)

Education Level: Intermediate to Advanced. Students should have: Knowledge of vernacular used in educating the Deaf/HH population; Some knowledge of vernacular used in speech-language pathology.
 
This course is eligible for 2 Continuing Education credit hours (CEs). Student achievement of the learning objectives will be performed through knowledge checks and quizzes.
